Happy Birthday Apple

April 1st, 1976 marks the day of the founding of Apple Computer Inc. (Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Computers) .

Combine this fact with the humor of April fools day, and you might not be surprised that the free music download (on iTunes Music Store) for the day is 4'33" by John Cage. (Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4%2733%22).

Bravo Apple, and Happy Birthday!

Techtool Deluxe free download.

When you purchase and Apple computer on campus, it is recommended that the purchaser also buy the parts only AppleCare that is part of the UNT Apple service. UNT's micro-maintenance division is an Authorized Apple repair center, so when a computer is purchased it is only necessary to warranty the parts, not the labor.

This being said, if you have AppleCare (and this goes for anyone who has AppleCare), you might be eligible to download a copy of TechTool Deluxe. To find out if you are eligible, go online to:

Searching the Address Book

A few people have commented on not being able to search for addresses in Entourage. Further investigation shows that the configuration of Entourage is usually what is the problem.

I have a post on this site (http://messaging.unt.edu/node/313) where I briefly explain a basic configuration of Entourage. Entourage access the address book by using an LDAP search, rather than downloading the OAB (Outlook Address Book) as done in Outlook 2007.

MacBook Pro Video Problems Confirmed

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

Yesterday Apple posted this KB article stating that there are issues with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT graphics processor in the MacBook Pro line of computers. This would be on laptops manufactured between May2007 and September 2008, newer MacBook Pro models. Good news is though that Apple has extended the standard 1 year warranty on the video processors for another year.

If you have purchased the parts only AppleCare with your MacBook Pro, then you would be covered for three years under that plan.

Hello World!

I'm always interested in what topics you might be interested in, and if you find this blog useful. I've heard from a few people, but I would be thrilled if everyone would send me a note.

Email your note to Jason.gutierrez@unt.edu

Thank you,

UNT Bookstore's extra discount on Apple Computers

This will be a quick one, but note worthy for those in the market for a new Mac.

I recently bought a new iMac for my home and found out later that the bookstore is offering and extra $50 off the already low educational pricing. Don't forget the free iPod (by rebate) when you make your purchase.

I think the sale goes on until the 15th of September, 2008. You will want to check with them for supply on hand.

Advise for Purchasing a Mac at UNT

Here is a fun one. People call me asking for insight into the purchase
process for a Mac at UNT. The first thing I ask, is this purchase for
yourself or for your department. The reason I ask is because there are
two slightly different methods you will need to use depending on the
purchase.

Remote Desktop Control 2.0 is out of Beta!

For those of you who use both Mac's and PC's, you have probably at some
time used RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) to access your PC. If you are
not familiar with RDC, it is very similar to ARD, Apple Remote Desktop,
or VNC, Virtual Network Connector. All of these applications open up a
window that allows you to work directly on your computer as if you were
sitting right in front of it. This is just like the screen sharing
feature new to Apple 10.5's iChat client.

Entourage 2008 SP1 Certificate Error

Just a note...

It's been a month ago since we opened a ticket with MS on the Entourage
certificate error, and they have been working diligently on it. It was
a rather odd DNS problem that didn't affect everyone who used Entourage
2008 SP1, but it did affect a significant number of people.

For UNT people, if you are using Entourage 2008 SP1 (earlier versions were not affected) on campus you would recieve a certificate error that said...

Jason G's Apple/Mac Blog

I'm always coming across some little tidbit of information relating to
Apple products that are used here at UNT. Some bits are for managers,
and other for aficionados. In either case, I'll be posting things I
come across here which I hope you will find useful. If you have a
direct question that isn't covered, go ahead an email me at
jasong(at)unt.edu. Cheers! Jason Gutierrez Messaging Systems
