iChat video and screen sharing not working?

in

A while ago I posted this entry (http://messaging.unt.edu/node/410) on leeching off your laptops internet connection for you iPhone.

There is one little side effect that I just found out. When you turn on internet sharing (in the System Preferences), you ability to conduct a screen share or A/V chat using iChat fails.

The simple fix, disable internet sharing.

Office 2008 12.1.3 update released

in

Yesterday (October 14th 2008), microsoft released their latest updater for Office 2008 for the Macintosh. As of this writing, the Office updater wasn't recognizing it (more specifically, my updater wasn't recognizing it) so I downloaded it directly from their site .

This is cool, and dangerous all at the same time...

There is this site that I like called "Secrets." If you like to walk the wild side and make custom configurations to your OS, then you might  find this site interesting. It is an open database for OS X hidden settings. Be warned though, it's not for the faint of heart.

VMWare News Updates for Apple Users

in

Two big stories out from VMWare. If you are not familiar with VMWare Fusion, it allows you run multiple operating systems within the host operating system, in this case OS X. In short, you use it to run Windows inside the Mac OS.

Help I'm getting Winmail.dat files and I can't see my attachment!!

in

So I get a call asking about an attachment called winmail.dat. The person was saying that this should have been an attachment they were expecting and they don't know how to get to it.

The problem stems from the senders side and not the receivers side. The senders Outlook client is set to compose the message in RTF (rich text format) instead of plain text or HTML. When the Mac user receives the message in Entourage, it will show the text of the message and the RTF version and accompanying attachment(s) are encapsulated in the winmail.dat file.

Connecting to Windows volumes from the Mac

in

There are several changes coming to some areas in the near future. As some of our Novell licensing come to a close, some areas are moving to Windows file shares. In the CITC, our software volume will be located on Widows servers as of this weekend (8-9-08).

So you want to run Window's on your Mac

in

Since Apple switched over to Intel processors, running Windows on a Mac has gotten easier and better. There are two basic ways to run Windows on your Mac, in a virtual setting or natively. More specifically, you can run Windows inside an envoironment like VMWare Fusion or Parallels, or you can boot your computer directly into the Windows OS using Boot Camp.

OS X AMP Server Licensing

in

I get this question from time to time, and I'll post my reply here to
the question: "Does UNT have an AMP agreement for OS X Server in
addition to the client licenses?" In short, the answer is no. The long
answer is that Apple does offer AMP (Apple Maintenance Program) for its
OS X Server software, though on an individual machine basis.

This means that you purchase AMP at the same time that you purchase
your server. There is no site license, or bulk server maintenance
program like there is for the clients.
